This people’s icon was originally painted using the encaustic technique. This one is completed in tempera and has appealing presentations related to the birth of Christ.

Sergius was a Roman soldier, who became a martyr in the 4th century in Resafa, Syria. This icon depicts him as a 13th century knight going on a crusade. This cult of knightly saints was very popular in the crusaders states. The woman kneeling and kissing his feet asks for inference of the holy spirit in favor of her husband or son, who is fighting in the Holy Land.

This icon is richly decorated with gold leaf, and the border is also beautifully executed with gold assist. The clothes of the Mother of God differ from those most commonly depicted. The Christ-child already has a somewhat older facial expression. The nimbuses of mother and child are richly decorated. The icon is kept in St Catharine’s Monastery on Sinai.

The original icon dates from the 13th century and has been restored several times over the centuries. The exquisitely painted robes of the child, the decorations on the clothes of the Mother of God, the fine lines in her face and the decorations on the aureole are reminiscent of the Cypriot School with Syrian influences. This icon is an animated representation of the resurrection of Christ, against the background of the Sinai. Christ descends into Hades and bears a decorated cross, representing the symbol of victory. Kings David and Solomon, as well as Adam and Eve, are to the left and right. Above are other figures including John the Baptist and Moses.
